The small town of Allora, Queensland, is once again gearing up to celebrate its favourite son, Matt Denny, fresh off his bronze medal win in the discus at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
This Friday, Denny will be back in town to officially open the Matt Denny Disc Golf Course, where locals and visitors alike will have the chance to see the Olympian hurl not just frisbees, but a selection of random objects he’s rumoured to be practising with, including hubcaps, a variety of pies, and the odd frozen pizza.
“It’s like golf but for normal people,” said one flyer.
The disc golf course, which stretches out beside the well-known Matt Denny Pie Shop, will also feature hazards inspired by his athletic achievements.
Local gossip says that Denny will be demonstrating his skills by launching pies from the bakery directly into the crowd, offering patrons a unique combination of sport and snack.
Directly across from the disc golf course sits the Matt Denny Rural Supplies which is next door to the new Matt Denny State School, which features a statue made of granite of the town’s first Olympian.
The day’s festivities begin with a street parade down Warwick and Herbert Streets at 2 PM, followed by a Q&A and afternoon tea at Allora Community Hall, where guests are invited to sample an array of baked goods inspired by Denny’s feats. Patrons can even test their own skills at throwing pies across the green.
One thing is certain, Allora is rolling out the red dirt carpet for a day that will solidify Matt Denny’s legacy not only as an Olympic medallist but also as a hometown hero whose name is quickly becoming synonymous with disc golf and delicious pies.
More to come.
