The CSIRO still has a team of scientists working around the clock, dedicated to figuring out what on earth goes through the minds of anyone that decides to get spacers.
Ear spacers are cylindrical pieces of jewelry that fit snugly into larger diameter body piercings, usually in the ear. This body modification soared to moderate popularity in the 2010s amongst society’s biggest attention lovers.
While most trends are generally spearheaded by a select few trend setters in a specific subculture, the origins of who started this bizarre trend, or even found it cool in the first place, remains unknown.
“It’s not looking good,” Said Matthew Bourke (55), a leading researcher at CSIRO.
“We are no closer than we were 10 years ago in figuring out why anyone would do this to their ears voluntarily.”
Despite having access to dozens of these people that have decided to shove an oversized disk into their ear, simply asking them has not gotten them any closer.
“When we ask them why they did it they just shrug and say they got them because they look cool” Said Mathew
Finbar Young (35), has proudly rocked ear spacers since his early 20s, he says they really aren’t a big deal and he doesn’t get what’s so weird about stretching your earlobes open in order to fit a 3cm ring into it.
“I just don’t get why people still stare at my ears all the time, like seriously, body modifications have been around forever now.”
Finbar completely rejects the idea that he gets a kick out of always being looked at, he says he’d much rather them finally become accepted by mainstream society.
