As social media feeds across the country flooded with colourful Spotify Wrapped graphics this week, local oddball Trent Walters took it upon himself to remind everyone that he doesn’t use Spotify, opting instead to share his Apple Music Replay.

The 28-year-old accountant from Betoota’s French Quarter said he doesn’t need Spotify and prefers the superior sound quality and more curated vibe of Apple Music.

But while Walters may pride himself on being different, his Apple Replay told a story that was shamelessly mainstream. According to his self-shared stats, his most listened-to song of 2024 was ABBA’s Ring Ring, which wasn’t exactly the deep cut he thought it was.

Topping his artist rankings were Frank Ocean, Taylor Swift, and J. Cole, proving that his taste is about as contrarian as a putting little drops of sriracha on smashed avo toast. Walters tried to downplay Swift’s appearance by suggesting it helps him sleep but the 27 000 minutes he spent listening to her says he should see a doctor about his insomnia.

“I just think it’s better,” he said of his choice of music streamer.

“Everyone uses Spotify and it’s so rank, the music quality is so grim. It’s for people who don’t appreciate music for what it is. It’s an art, not a fiscal slam pig like some so-called ‘artists’ treat it. They know who they are,”

“I’d use something for folky like TIDAL or YouTube Music, or even SoundCloud, but I think Apple Music is the great centrist coward, like me.”

More to come.
