Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has capped off a successful trip to China this week with an important trade set to shake up the NRL competition.
This morning Albo confirmed after extensive negotiations with Xi Jinping that Australia will finally be able to offload the Wests Tigers, a binfire of a club that’s brought deep shame to both the Balmain and Campbelltown regions over the past 15 years.
The news comes as the NRL prepares to welcome an 18th team to the comp, the Guangzhou Rams, an expat Rugby Union side that’s agreed to give the NRL a crack based on the assumption that they can’t be any worse than what the Tigers have been dishing up.
Despite being a team made of a mix-match of expats from Canada, Russia, South Africa and one ex-Toowoomba Grammar flyhalf who’s found himself working in China in agribusiness, it’s believed the team are excited to swap their Gilbert for a Steeden.
“Rugby League players are one of our nation’s most lucrative exports,” Albanese said to his travelling press pack this morning.
“We’ve been shipping 3rd grade leaguies to the Super League for years, so I’m proud to announce this trade which will see the NRL finally get rid of the Tigers.”
“As a proud sporting nation, it’s important we continue to give airtime to elite performers, both those on the field and those in the head office, otherwise we’ll end up like the British cricket team and settle for absolute mediocrity.”
Speaking to the CEO of the NRL Andrew Abdo, it’s believed the Guangzhou Rams will be the latest expansion side to run underneath the supreme maroon banners of Queensland.
“The western corridor of Brisbane is vital to our competition’s success, so we’re looking at a potential merger to create the Goodna-Guangzhou Rams,” said Abdo.
“I can also confirm we’re drafting the paperwork to finally get the PNG Kumuls into the comp, but that decision is more to help Albo to sure up national security in the Pacific.”
