The nation and the tennis world is in shock this afternoon, after local hero Ash Barty revealed she will be retiring from tennis.
The 25-year-old sensationally announced that she will be quitting the game she holds the number one ranking in, just a couple of months after winning the Australian Open.
Revealing the news through social media, the three-time Grand Slam champion confirmed that she will be leaving the sport, seemingly at the peak of her powers.
Speaking with long-time friend Casey Dellacqua, Barty said she didn’t quite know how to reveal the news.
“I am so thankful for everything this sport has given me and leave feeling proud and fulfilled,” she said in the video.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, I’ll always be grateful for the lifelong memories that we created together.
However, The Advocate can exclusively reveal that the tennis champion is set to take the Women’s Big Bash League by storm this year – signing a comeback deal with the Brisbane Heat.
This comes nearly six years after the Ipswich local’s short stint in the WBBL and Brisbane Cricket, despite having no formal training in the sport.
Barty joins the likes of Georgia Voll, Grace Harris, and Georgia Redmayne in the squad hopeful of taking out this year’s competition.
More to come.
