With Brisbane sides making an appearance in both the AFL and NRL grand finals, both Broncos and Lions fans are marching hand in hand to glory this weekend
In perhaps the lesser documented finals run, the Brisbane Lions take on Collingwood in the AFL showpiece at the MCG on Saturday – and it’s already spurred a bit of silliness in the River City.
On top of the Broncos fans ramming Brisbane pubs every night in hysterical excitement, it seems the more refined Queensland Aussie Rules fans are also throwing caution to the wind and suspending their own realities until the full time whistle blows.
Newstead-based Tasmanian oak importer, Matthew Leigh, is brimming with finals fever – and really does believe his mighty Lions can go all the way.
This morning, 5 days out from the AFL’s Big Dance, he decided to wear his zany coloured socks.
Opting for a Lime Scooter commute into town, rather than his 8 dollar Uber, Matthew arrives at his favourite coffee shop with windswept hair – and realises he’s not the only excited sports fan in the city.
While the hungover Broncos fans seated inside the cafe devour their big breakfast fritters, bacon, fried eggs, sausages, roast tomato, minute steak, hash brown and beans – the Lions fan also decides to throw caution to the wind.
“Actually” he says to the barista, after ordering his three quarter cinnamon latte with oak and a squirt of honey.
“I might go dairy today”
The barista looks at him as though he’s having a laugh.
“Seriously?” she asks.
Matthew smirks, knowing full well of the potential repercussions of exposing his well-balanced gut health to tyranny of milk that was produced by a cow, but remains committed to rolling the dice on the possibility of not taking a solid shit for the rest of the week.
“Yep. Cow juice please. Why not?”
“It’s grand final weekend after all hahahaha”
