Stradbroke Island’s Ethan Yewing has bowed out the Olympic surfing quarter finals against fellow Aussie Jack Robinson, with priority, but no more waves left to help him bypass the Margaret River boy’s second score of 7.33.
Ewing come out of a barrel hot in a response wave that landed him an 8.33 and catapulted him into the lead.
However, in the end, Jack Robinson scored 15.33 to Ewings 13.00 in some Irukandjis friendly fire. Ewing frustratingly waited for that final decent set, which never arrived.
There’d been high hopes for the Queenslander to win gold at the Olympics surfing comp in French Polynesia, with The Betoota Advocate reporting yesterday that his home island was ‘yewing’ in support of their boy.
Unfortunately, the waves of Teahupo’o were not up to scratch for Ewing, who is used to not only far more waves, but far more exciting action.
It is believed that Yewing was unable to put on a full Straddie performance when faced with the sheer lack of rich Brisbane moron tourists attempting to learn how to surf in front of him.
Without the balding heads of overweight Ascot stockbrokers bobbing in front of him, all Yewing had to focus on was the boring reef and minimal swell.
The absence of chaotic drop-ins and white collar wipeouts left the Olympian feeling underwhelmed in the unfamiliar surf.
The 25-year-old will now support his fellow countrymen from the shore, and turn his focus to the LA games, where he will fight out it with the Lords Of Dogtown.
