Footscray-born coffee technician Banjo Tuesday explained candidly to The Advocate this afternoon that he was actually at the group cheering on the Australian cricket team as they record a historic win over Pakistan at the MCG.

As opposed to rolling his eyes whenever any of his morning clients speak about sports, Banjo was apparently in the small crowd gathered at the MCG today – which was privy to one of the most significant Test victories of the past decade.

“It’s true that I don’t like sport. Honestly, I don’t even know why people say Melbourne is the sports capital of Australia,” he said. “but I love Test cricket. It’s so fucking fun to watch. I mean, just look at this Test, it’s gone right down to the wire.”

“And we won!”

That second fact is reason why so many young hip Melbourne men are now starting to openly talk and express their old, undying love for the red-ball game.

After numerous rain delays and set-backs, the crowd that witnessed the victory this afternoon can all go home with something special in their hearts – that they saw something you don’t see every day.

That lies at the heart of hip man – to be a part of something needlessly exclusive and rare.

“You’d understand if you actually liked cricket, which means you would’ve been there. It was some magic shit, brother.”

More to come.
