A Betoota Dugongs batsman was left ruing the elements this weekend, after a somewhat lacklustre performance in the field.

Declan Johnson (26) who plays in the lowest grade for the Dugongs, started off this year’s cricket season with a bang, of sorts.

After making a gritty 7 of 32 balls with the bat, Johnson looked to keep things ticking over with a Roy like effort in the field.

However, things went a little pear-shaped when Johnson dropped what could only be described as a sitter early on in the innings.

After a few audible curses from teammates, (notably a “For fuck sake,” from the bowler), the young man resorted to a tried and tested fallback.

Staring up at the sky and shaking his head.

Johnson explained to The Advocate that despite the heavy cloud cover rolled over Betoota over the weekend, there were still a few piercing rays of sun throughout the day.

3 in fact, for each catch that he dropped in the field.

“Honestly, I had the worst luck. I did put down a couple of catches, but they were bombs that I lost in the sun,” he said.

“Half chances at best if you are really honest about it.”

However, despite that defence, Johnson confirmed he still hasn’t made eye contact with the opening bowler whose wicket’s he dropped.

“Yeah he is a bit off about it, but he’ll be alright. He was just looking for someone to blame really,” Johnson said.

“And just to be clear I won’t be doing extra catching practice because I couldn’t hang onto a couple of fliers.”
