Kevy: “The Boys’ve Come A Long Fucken Way Since The $10 Hits In Harpoon Harry’s That’s For Sure”
As the 2023 NRL season reaches it’s pointy end, every possible Premiership outcome has the makings of a fairytale.
A Melbourne Storm premiership cement the legacy of coach Craig Bellamy, who has the chance to prove that he very much has what it takes to go all the way for the 5th (7th) time with a completely new generation of players and relentless injuries.
Or will it be the New Zealand Warriors winning their first ever, overshadowing their nation’s beloved All Blacks in the middle of a Rugby Union World Cup.
Then there’s the possibility of the Penrith Panthers winning their third straight in their fourth straight grand final. Will the local boys bring the shield back out west?
However, one unsung fairtytale is the Brisbane Broncos Renaiisance.
On this year of all years, after the NRL introduced a long-awaited rival Brisbane team in the shape of the Redcliffe Dolphins, the Broncos has proven their ability to shake off the rust.
As an iconic Queensland sporting institution who has been missing in action for 20 years, fans and haters alike had assumed that splitting the Brisbane market would only make things worse for the Broncos.
However, the boys have proven them wrong, with one of the most high-octane seasons in living memory.
Speaking to the media today, coach Kevy Walter says it’s not lost on him that everyone thought they’d be cooked for another 20 years.
“Golden ages can return” he said.
“We can repeat the success of Wayne and Wally. We’ve proven that. And we can turn it around fucken fast”
Kevy glares at the once-skeptical sports journalists and smirks.
“The boys’ve come a long fucken way since the $10 hits in Harpoon Harry’s that’s for sure” he says, in reference to the 2019 incident where over 6 Brisbane Broncos were spotted drinking piss and playing pokies in the iconic inner-city Sydney hotel the night before they were pumped 58-0 by the Parramatta Eels in their last match of the season..
“I can tell ya” says Kevy.
“Harpoon Harry’s is the first fucken joint we’ll be pulling into when the bus leaves Accor Stadium with the silverware”
The Broncos and Warriors square off for a place in the 2023 NRL Telstra Premiership on Saturday night.
