In news that won’t really surprise anyone, the failed footballers turned succesful alcoholics who make up the NewsCorp sports analysis programme known as NRL 360 have taken issue with the Manly Sea Eagles attempts to be nice to gay people.
Paul Kent, who played one match for Parramatta in an era when literal plumbers were notching 200 games, reportedly went on a rant last night about ‘the woke left’ and yada yada yada in a valuable hour of sporting analysis that you may have missed if you have any respect for yourself.
Despite the clickbaity culture wars, the fact remains that seven players have stood themselves down after the club announced the ‘pride jersey’ – featuring rainbow stripes and trim – which was supposed to worn as a one-off for their NRL match against the Sydney Roosters.
Josh Aloiai, Jason Saab, Christian Tuipulotu, Josh Schuster, Haumole Olakau’atu, Tolutau Koula and Toafofoa Sipley were reportedly opposed to wearing the jersey due to religious beliefs, because as we all know, Manly players have a reputation for not straying from God’s light.
The one positive to come from this binfire of a poorly executed milestone of social justice advocacy is the fact that a bunch of first timers may have had the opportunity to make an NRL debut in the absence of the happy clappers.
However, with Manly sitting at number 9 on the ladder, and the Sydney Roosters sitting just above them, the pressure is for the Northern Beaches club to put on a clinic against the Eastern Suburbs, as they attempt to claw their way back into the final 8 with just 6 matches to go in the regular season.
It’s for this reason that coach Des Hasler has had to call on some weathered mercenaries from yesteryear.
He’s calling on seven of the 2011 Bad Boys to step up and fill the side. Seven men who don’t waste time pretending to be saints. Seven men who remember the glory days of Oxford Street and Kings Cross quite well. Seven men who will wear the rainbow jersey and get the job done.
With two players still playing for Manly 11 years later in Daly Cherry-Evans and Keiran Foran, and the same coach at the helm, it’s time to get the gang back together.
The Bad Boy replacements are as follows: Brett ‘The Snake’ Stewart, Steve ‘Shoulders’ Matai, Anthony ‘Choc’ Watmough, Tony ‘T-Rex’ Williams, Brent ‘Sovereign Citizen’ Kite, Glenn ‘Hookvale’ Stewart, Jamie ‘Killer’ Lyon and last but not least, Gorgeous Georgie Rose.
John Hopoate will also sit on the bench, although it is not sure if he is okay with the rainbow jersey… Despite… You know.
