Before this morning, West Tigers player Waylon Zammit (31) was only really known as a run-of-the-mill club journeyman with a hectic neck tatt.
That was before his skipper rolled an ankle at training and was unable to talk to the press while he iced it down.
With no other players on the team capable of stringing a sentence together in the way that journalists might be able to understand, Waylon was given the call up to field any questions about how the squad was feeling going into this weekend’s fixtures.
With his pearly white veneers sparkling through a series of charismatic exchanges with the media scrum, Zammit was able prove to both his club and the greater rugby league audiences that he is much more than a warhorse back rower.
He’s a grown man that can speak for up to five minutes without using any language that is unfit to broadcast.
In fact, it could even be argued that Waylon has got a sense of humour – he’s not JT but, he is a bit of fun.
This was all confirmed when his five minute media appearance went viral on the NRL blogs an hour or so later, as audiences responded quite well to his ‘darkhorse’ ability to engage in playful banter with the media.
The fact that Zammit decided to give his hair a bit of a brush and wear a tie has also seen him skyrocket to sex icon status – as footy mums take notice of a grown man with even the mildest taste in fashion outside of NBA jerseys.
At time of press, Zammit was being interviewed by Big League for a feature on this year’s ‘SEXIEST MEN IN LEAGUE’ profile.
He has also been earmarked for a commentary career with Fox Sports and Channel 9.
