Manly Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler has today apologised to players, fans, the NRL and members of the LGBTQI+ community – after the disastrous ‘pride jersey’ saga.
This genius idea come from the club’s publicity team, who wanted the football team to be like one of those cool brands like Uber and Rio Tinto who can get away with pillaging the earth and enslaving working people to the gig economy because they put a rainbow in their logo once a year.
In true publicist fashion, the idea for a one-club Pride Round was obviously brainstormed during ‘Pride Month’ and has taken nearly two months to implement.
On top of this, the club’s devoutly religious footballers weren’t informed of these plans, and had to find out through their own pastors when it was revealed via a press release.
While, the club was applauded on Sunday for launching this special LGBTI special jersey, on Women in League Round for some reason, the social media buzz almost immediately turned into damage control when seven players declared they wouldn’t take on the Roosters on Thursday night because they weren’t consulted about the jersey.
The jersey was received well and sold out within 24 hours on the club’s website. However, it now means that the Manly Sea Eagles have to take on the Roosters on Thursday night without seven of their best players.
However, Manly’s temporary loss, which will likely see them knocked out of the final eight in the 2022 competition, will be looked upon fondly in the history books – after the Sydney Roosters decided to join in on the action as well.
In one of the quickest turn-arounds in rugby league history, the Sydney Rooster have today debuted the biggest rainbow jerseys of all time – as they prepare to make tender love to the handsome Manly Sea Eagles on a muddy oval this Thursday night.
Speaking to the media today, coach Trent Robinson said joining in on the Rainbow stuff was a no brainer.
“Obviously, as you all know, I speak French as well as English, and have lived in France”
“Therefore, I have been exposed to a lot of lavender-scented gentlemen. Who I realised are all great blokes”
“So are the Lesbians”
“And ya know, the Mardi Gras takes place down the road from our homeground…”
“So bring it on”
“We’ll have em!!”
