In news that has shaken the very foundations of the National Rugby League, it seems that a weekend of heavy drinking in regional New South Wales has resulted in some drama.
This comes after the St George Illawarra were thumped 42-24 by the South Sydney Rabbitohs in their annual Charity Shield match, but coaching staff gave the players the green light to head out on the piss afterwards.
While the town at the centre of this horrifying scandal is the wine capital of Mudgee, not a regional hub readily associated with rowdy behaviour, it can be assumed that the visiting superstars may have been given an extra long leash by local pubs and bouncers.
It is believed the players were well behaved and polite while out on the town, but there was an issue when they returned to their accommodation and a bit of a brouhaha needed to be broken up by teammates.
This unprecedented behaviour has rocked the NRL and Australian sports journalism to it’s core. It’s a scandal made worse by the fact that the football club doesn’t really seem to care.
“The Dragons are aware of a verbal argument that took place between two players at the team hotel on Sunday morning,” the club said in a statement on Monday night.
“guess that’s what happens when a bunch of disgruntled blokes drink 100 schooners after being pumped by 20 points.”
“The club will make no further comment at this time.”
It is unknown if anyone will be disciplined for this disgraceful behaviour, but the NRL Integrity Unit is believed to be sending private investigators to Mudgee this afternoon, where they will interrogate local residents about what they might’ve seen throughout this fateful evening.
