World-record sprinter and Usain Bolt has tested positive for the coronavirus and is in self-quarantine at his home in Jamaica, the eight-time Olympic gold medallist has confirmed on social media today.
This marks the first time the fastest man in the world has willingly taken part in any form of a test, and is definitely the first time he has tested positive for anything.
Daily confirmed cases in Jamaica have surged to more than 60 per day across the past four days from less than 10 just a few weeks ago. Jamaica now has 1,612 confirmed cases, with 622 active cases and 16 deaths from coronavirus.
It is for this reason that Bolt has agreed to take part in a Jamaican testing program, and subsequently shared his result, for the first time in his life.
The last time Usain Bolt was asked to take any form of a test was during his brief stint playing soccer for Australia’s Central Coast Mariners.
Bolt took to the instagram at the time to express his disbelief at being issued a drug testing notice by Football Federation Australia.
However, after showing COVID-19 symptoms a week after his 34th birthday party, the track and field icon has finally agreed to allowing a doctor to look at what is inside him.
Jamaica’s health ministry confirmed late on Monday that Bolt, who holds world records in the 100-metre and 200-metre sprints, had tested positive to he virus, and only the virus.
“He has tested positive to absolutely nothing else” read the statement.
“Shame on all of you for thinking otherwise”
