Rapper and producer 21 Savage was arrest yesterday in Atlanta over claims he was born in the United Kingdom and emigrated to the United States as a teenager, according to local media outlets.
Savage, born Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, first came to the attention of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after the 26-year-old tweeted about the upcoming Ashes series that’s due to kick off in England this July.
That Ashes tweet is just the latest in a string of cricket-related tweets written by the musician, with a number of now-deleted tweets showcasing Savage’s disgust at the recent English effort against the West Indies in the Caribbean.
The Advocate reached out to ICE for comment on the case and received a detailed response as to why the decided to both detain and investigate the rap sensation.
“If all those tweets weren’t a dead giveaway, he even retweeted Robelinda and complained complained about the umpiring at the last Test in Antigua,” said the offical statement.
“That and one of his favourite rappers is MF DOOM, who is also a British-born rapper who found fame after moving to America as a young man,”
“And if that’s still not enough, he’s got no music on his iPhone. Just Harry Potter audiobooks. The case we’re building against him is very strong.”
Our reporter also reached out to 21 Savage’s management for comment but have yet to receive a reply.
