A new era begins for the Australian Liberal Party!

Southern NSW MP Sussan Ley has been elected as the 80-year-old political institution’s first female leader at Federal level, after defeating rival candidate Angus Taylor in a tightly contested ballot.

The deputy leadership ballot was won by the unknown shadow energy minister Ted O’Brien, who is from Noosa and really likes nuclear energy.

However, despite the historical precedent, this new leadership is set to be as unstable as any that came before it.

Ley only won 29 of the partyroom votes, compared to 25 for shadow treasurer Taylor – who has spent his whole life being told that he will become Prime Minister of Australia one day.

As history shows, Liberal leadership ballots with such razor thin margins tend to be dismantled within 18 months.

Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price did not contest the deputy leadership after previously announcing she would, meaning that Angus Taylor has been outplayed by female colleagues on two fronts.

With his back against the wall, and an utterly lost party room running around in circles, Angus Taylor has had to head bush and map out his political future.

He’s driven far further west than his hometown in the Snowy Mountains, and kept going until the dirt gets red.

With a plastic sack and a crowbar, Taylor has spent the afternoon hacking at termite ant hills and harvesting a decent sample of the famous wood-decaying roaches.

He’s heading back to Canberra tonight, and will begin sprinkling the dirt and termites in the Liberal Party room.

Jacinta Price will not be invited to join him for phase two of Operation Great Move Well Done Angus.
