Local Bulimba woman, Tracey Oxford isn’t taking any chances with her 36 month old, Johannes.
After a few near misses in the sleepy river bend Brisbane suburb, including one incident where both her son and ageing mother were awoken by a noisy oncoming motorbike that nearly drove off the road out of fright, she has today decided to take action.
Invented by German-American car manufacturers in Massachusetts, “Baby on board” is the message of a small yellow, usually 12 centimetres, sign intended to be placed in the back window of an automobile to caution other drivers that an infant is travelling in the automobile. First responders of car accidents still use the sign as an indicator that there might be a small child in a vehicle.
This historic novelty sign is Tracey’s last resort.
Tracey says she didn’t think it would have to come to this, but after nearly clipping an entire peloton of amateur cyclists – she can’t believe that people think they own the roads like this.
By putting a bright yellow Baby On Board sticker, the young mother and her husband hope the timid motorists in her surrounding area will show some caution when driving past her 2,360kg suburban utility vehicle.
“I don’t know how much more I can do to keep my darling Joh safe” she says.
“Do you know how easily Range Rovers cars can flip?”
