For generations, a portrait of HM The Queen has watched over the reception area of the Betoota Dolphins Leagues Club.
But for the past year or so, the portrait of our Head of State was replaced by Bridget McKenzie’s official parliamentary headshot.
It attracted the odd wry comment. Some thought it was a joke, others thought the Club president had lost his mind. Both were plausible.
But as recent news suggests, the Dolphins board received a large amount of money in the form of grants from the Federal Government in the lead up to last year’s election.
But why? Our desert community lies within the borders of the nation’s safest federal electorate.
Perhaps it’s because our cosmopolitan way of life here on the banks of the roaring Diamantina River results in two thrids of our community voting for Labor or the Greens?
What ever the reason may be, the reception of the Dolphins Club is once again surveiled by Her Majesty The Queen.
Why? I guess we’ll never know.
The Advocate reached out to the President of the Dolphins Cloub for comment but have yet to receive a reply.
More to come.
