SAME SAME: As the cost of living in Australia continues to skyrocket, one local woman has made a heartbreaking return to the humble culinary treasure she once considered a ‘last resort’— her childhood supermarket go-to, the Yogo chocolate yogurt topped with mini M&Ms.
Talia Richards (29), who had become addicted to her routine visits to her local Yo-chi store, has now been forced to dust off the old favourite after seeing the price of her regular high-end frozen yoghurt now surging into double digit territory.
“I tried to pretend it wasn’t happening, but with all the toppings I usually get, my Yo-chi bowls were costing more than my weekly groceries, I had no choice,” she sighed, holding a multi-pack of Yogo and avoiding eye contact with us.
Richards, who once turned her nose up at the sugary processed treat, now finds herself bargaining with the one constant in her life—chocolate sludge with crunchy M&M toppings.
“I used to love this stuff as a kid, but now it just reminds me of rent payments”, she told Betoota.
The reality of the cost of living crisis has hit Talia hard, but she’s soldiering on, spoon in hand.
“Look, it’s not gelato, but at least it’s under $5”, she shrugged. “And hey, nostalgia’s free, right?”
