Flap-clapping in a well-worn pair of thongs, the muffled swift of his torn tracksuit pants in the wind.
His bronze frequent flyer card in his hand, wedged on top of his passport.
Local man Darcy Michael has been in Europe for the past 90 days and he told The Advocate this morning local time that he can’t wait to get home.
But before he climbed inside the belly of the Airbus set to take him home, the 19-year-old soon-to-be-student thought he’d take a shot many have taken – and missed.
He recounted the exchange for our reporter.
At the check-in desk, he made eye contact with the well-built and handsome brown-eyed man behind the desk and cleared his throat.
“Mate, is business class full on this flight?” he said.
At this point, Michaels says the check-in man looked him up and down and said that it was a full flight.
Not willing to take no for an answer, young Darcy held his bronze frequent flyer card up and smiled.
“Even for a bronze class man like me?”
The check-in man then explained to Mr Michaels that he was about to fly on a mid-week China Southern flight that included a 17-hour layover in Guangzhou that he booked through a third-party site.
The bronze card Darcy was holding was for Qantas and had 600 points on it and zero status credits.
“Ok mate, no need to be rude.”
More to come.
