As US rapper Kendrick Lamar graces global audiences with a historic Super Bowl halftime performance, his rival rapper Drake has plenty of reason to feel like salt is being rubbed into his wounds.
The Canadian rapper and his Californian contemporary have been involved in a rap feud for over a decade — a rivalry that was greatly magnified by the release of Kendrick Lamar’s 2024 song “Not Like Us” – a song that directly criticises Drake for a myriad of reasons, while also levelling explosive accusations.
With Kendrick Lamar gifted the highest honour in American music, to perform at a Super Bowl, Drake has made a point of being as far from North America as humanly possible.
But still, the humiliation remains.
On top of Kendrick Lamar’s historical Grammy victories, the fact that he has also just performed ‘Not Like Us’ of modern hip hop in front of sold out Caesar’s Superdome stadium in New Orleans, in scenes that have been broadcast right around the world to billions.
It’s seems that even employing world class PR experts to prevent the song from being performed was of no use, Kendrick Lamar has just torn Drake to shreds on the biggest platform in hip hop.
But Drake says he’s not really paying much attention to one of the biggest sporting events in the world right now, because he’s really loving Melbourne.
“The coffee is so good” says Drake.
“And all of the cool laneways”
“There’s a lot of empty shop fronts in the city, but that kind of adds to the coolness”
According to Drake’s tour itinerary, the rapper has decided to spend a week in Melbourne, which is much longer than most Australian non-residents would spend there.
But at the bottom of the continent, far removed from the drama of New Orleans, Drake is able to get lost in the culture.
“I thought I’d be seeing that Opera House and some beaches, but I’m apparently in the wrong city”
“But still, it’s not a bad place to visit. I had a really good croissant today”
“And it’s really awesome to be able to watch live comedy at 3am”
“Hopefully this rain clears up”
