Despite getting 240 points over the weekend, a far south-west grazier has told The Advocate that he could probably do with a little bit more.
Our reporter spoke to Darcy Tuxworth, who took time out of his busy afternoon of looking at full dams and ringing his neighbours to explain that while he’s grateful for getting some rain finally, he feels his country would benefit from getting just a little bit more.
This Sunday gone, our reporter when to visit the 65-year-old out at his property, Astoria, out on the Retreat Road.
“This dam up here at the house was pretty much empty two weeks ago,” Darcy said.
“As you can see now, it’s full. You can see where it overflowed up there on the other side. It’s barely been 24 hours and you can see the country is responding well to the rain. Good to see,”
“But ah, yeah. We could probably do with a little bit more out here. We had some good rain in the middle of harvest in November, which was nice and convenient for all involved. Came over in the middle of the night, too.”
When asked what he’d do if he did get more rain, Darcy said he wasn’t sure but he’d find something to do.
“It all depends,” he said.
“Put a crop in, I don’t know. Depends how much moisture is in the ground. Depends if I can afford to spray the place first. All my kids were pretty dumb and unathletic so I didn’t get good deals with their boarding schools. I’m still paying them off. So who knows?”
“But I’d know more if I got more rain, you know?”
More to come.
