French Rugby has today revealed that their recent successes at a domestic level is a direct result of their new rugby league academy.
In a move that has set the presses alight, Ben Barba has sensationally walked out on NRL Premiers Cronulla, to talk up a lucrative contract with French Rugby Club Toulon.
However, in terms of recent history, it’s a well-worn path for burnout rugby league players.
Barba spoke to the Advocate earlier, revealing why he chose to snub the Sharks and head to the south of France.
“Aww mate, I mean everyone’s pretty aware that the amount of cash they are going to pay me is pretty fucking good,” he explained.
“But look, it’s the not only reason. They really look after us washed up footy stars. The academy for Burnt Out Stars is a proper set up. They protect you if you know what I mean. I can get away with whatever I want off the field there, just because no one really cares or is watching what you get up to.”
Barba reveals a conversation he had with code hopper Sonny Bill Williams in the weeks leading up to his decision; “Yeah Sonny told me you can just leave, go over there, play a bit of footy, get up to all sorts and then just come back later.”
The Sharks favourite who played an integral part in the premiership charge last year compared the NRL to high school girlfriend; “Brah, I know no matter what I do they will take me back in the end and all will be forgiven.”
Mourad Boudjellal told the us candidly that he didn’t really even know who Barba was, “Ahhhh yes you see, I just heard from some friends zat he is a good player, so I think why not, I just buy him.”
