In the Thompson household, Friday nights are for one thing and one thing only – B grade action flicks. Not that anyone has a choice anyway. It’s just the only thing local dad Phil Roberts will watch.

His daughter, Chelsea, tells The Advocate that his father had initially been suspicious of streaming services but came round once he realised he could watch his favourite action flicks completely uninterrupted.

“I’ve been fighting tooth and nail to get dad up to speed with technology over the years.”

“I remember handing him a pair of headphones and blasting Nelly Furtado’s Maneater on high.”

“It was like watching one of those videos where kids can hear sounds for the first time. He bloody loved it, said it was like a concert in his head.”

Chelsea’s latest fight is getting dad to watch movies that are not only outside his usual genre, but with leads he doesn’t recognise.

“I’ve had to ease him into things slowly. He’s finally starting to recognise Ryan Gosling, thinks he’s an alright bloke.”

“Fucking lost his shit watching The Big Short when Brad Pitt came out of nowhere.”

“God he loves Brad.”

Chelsea adds that his biggest reaction, however, was reserved for his first watch of Kingsman, The Secret Service, when a lispy Samuel L. Jackson made an appearance.

“OOH”

“DO YOU KNOW WHERE HE’S FROM? IT’S…WHAT’S HIS NAME.”

“FROM PULP FICTION.”

More to come.
