In a surprising twist in the ongoing debate about empty homes, Betoota Heights resident Brea Heinemann, 28, has come forward with a strong stance against the phenomenon—except when it comes to her friend’s family beach house.
Brea, a passionate advocate for sustainable community living, has been vocal about the negative impact of empty holiday properties on local economies. She argues that these empty homes, often left unoccupied for most of the year, contribute to housing shortages and inflate property prices, making it difficult for local residents to find affordable housing.
“I thoroughly believe it’s unethical to own more than one home ”, says Brea, “it just deprives locals of much needed housing.”
“Investment properties and Airbnbs are a scourge on society!”
However, Brea’s stance appears to have a notable exception. She has openly admitted that she doesn’t mind the situation when it comes to her friend’s family beach house in New South Wales. The property, located in a picturesque coastal town, is frequently used by Brea and her friends for weekend getaways, when it’s not holiday season – for free too.
“Yeah but that’s different though”, says Brea, letting out an awkward laugh, “it’s uh…you now, we work hard and look after the property, so it’s…you know…”
“Well, at least we’re not leaving it empty.”
More to come.
