The entire staff at the Diamantina’s premier fashion magazine are working from home indefinitely – but that doesn’t mean the everyday challenges of working at in such a high-pressure have gone away.
April Day, the marketing manager at House, Home & Mortgage Magazine, is treading a fine line this morning between a potential social media disaster and selling this autumn’s wardrobe-essentials.
“The potential disaster being something corona-related,” she said.
The 20-something go-getter spoke briefly to The Advocate this morning at school drop-off. To make ends meet, she’s now nannying for a Betoota Grove family and living in their guesthouse above the double garage.
“Like, you need to be sensitive and respectful of like all the sick people and everyone being in lockdown and everything but you also need to sell clothes for our clients,” she said.
“It’s a fucking wig-out, like I feel like there’s more pressure on me not to fuck up than an ANZAC Day two-up ringie at 4pm,”
“I mean, did you see the post Vogue [Australia] did this morning? Ahhhh talk about a whoopsie-doodle! Anyway, it’s doing my head in but I reckon it’ll be OK.”
The Advocate reached out to House, Home & Mortgage Magazine’s editor, Melanie Overell, who was our editor Clancy’s second wife.
She said that her faith in her staff is unwavering – until they fuck up.
“Then they’re largely on their own,” she said.
“I learned that from Clancy. He could be a real cold bastard, he could. Which is probably why I divorced him but we had fun while it lastest. That and the fact he’d lie on the couch until noon smoking pot most days,”
“It’s more important, now more than ever, to be conscious of the pangolinic plague when you market things,”
“Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you need to dress like trash.”
