Almost seven people have lost their job this quarter in New Zealand, which nearly doubles the total amount of unemployed.
There are now close to 14 unemployed people in New Zealand, which is the highest on record. It eclipses the previous record of 11 which was record during the Great Depression.
Only four people lost their jobs during the Global Financial Crisis, however, over $90 was lost on local sharemarkets, which amounted for nearly a third of the micronation’s gross domestic product.
Speaking today in Wellington, the Kiwi Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said her government is committed to getting Glen Lindsay, Fionola Kinnaird, Petera Patterson, Eachann McKinley, Jessie McInnes and Seonag Stirling back in the workforce as soon as possible.
“It’s terrible that these seven people had to lose their jobs,” said the PM.
“But as COVID-19’s death grip around our little throat weakens, I can see us all slowly getting back to normal life,”
“These job losses were sad but as a government, we are committed to getting these guys back on their feet.”
New Zealand has loosened its restrictions considerably in the past week and the rest of the world is waiting to see how.
More to come.
