Box office smash Barbie has received eight Oscar nominations – but the fact that the $145 million Mattel advertisement was not nominated in every single category has seen the Academy Award face extreme online backlash.
Director Greta Gerwig and lead star Margot Robbie were predicted to be two major contenders for this year’s nominations, with millions of people who only went to the cinema once in the last twelve months expecting that the pair would receive the type of recognition that is reserved for the greatest living filmmakers and character actors of all time.
While Robbie was nominated as a producer for the film in the best picture category, and Gerwig received a nomination for best adapted screenplay – the fact that this film has not been nominated in every single category has outraged a global army of girlbosses who are now furious that the majority of awards will go to Korean people who make movies that need subtitles.
The pair’s notable omissions from the actress and director category has resulted in severe backlash, with even Ryan Gosling, who received a nomination for best supporting actor, speaking out against the Academy’s snubs of his colleagues.
“There is no Ken without Barbie” wrote the actor, who secured a nomination in a pretty weak year for best supporting actors, most of whom are scary genocidal side characters in Killer Of The Flower Moon – and mute scientists working alongside Cillian Murphy.
The becky feminist outrage over the Academy’s decision to not take part in a complete Barbie supremacy has also minimised the fact that Lily Gladstone has made Oscars history, as the first Native American nominated for best actress.
However, in some positive news to come out of today’s nominations, films made in the United Kingdom are now considered foreign lol.
