Australian humans and horses alike have reacted with relief to the news today that reports last month of retired racehorses being unceremoniously slaughtered in abattoirs were entirely fabricated.
Listen here to our interview with swimming champion Mack Horton:
According to an unnamed whistleblower, the reports were totally fabricated by Sportsbet and Racing NSW to speed up the entrants in the recent 2019 Everest.
“We stand by our actions; I’m sure at some stage racehorses have gone to the abattoir, so we weren’t technically lying” said Earnest Kwine, Racing NSW’s Public Relations Manager.
“It’s not our fault that certain radio stations decided to cover the story and those radio stations were playing in the stables where the horses were. Or that certain newspapers covered the issue and copies of those newspapers were laid on the floor of certain horse stabling buildings instead of hay. Or that certain stablehands were having scripted conversations within earshot of certain horses. I mean, if certain horses hear that sluggish horses suffer a slow and painful death before being turned into dog food and consequently decide to run a bit faster, that’s nothing to do with us”.
The Betoota Advocate reached out to numerous racehorses affected by the news; unfortunately, none were prepared to discuss the issue.
