A regional cafe has been given a standing ovation this morning, after not skimping on a side serving of toast.
Tucked away in the backstreets of Betoota’s antiques district, local business ‘Higher Grounds’ is believed to be living up to its four out of five star reviews on Tripadvisor, impressing traveling Queenslanders who have stopped through Betoota for lunch.
Popular with mothers groups thanks to its cubby house play arena overlooking the river, The Advocate understands the cafe has blown caravan adventurers away thanks to its generously buttered toast and comforting ‘Soup of The Day’.
Speaking to one grey nomad, Mark Edwards from Hervey Bay, the experienced tourist said today’s serving of soup was so good, he planned to tell the waitstaff that he enjoyed it.
“I’ve travelled through about 150 different towns in my time, but it’s rare to find a cafe that gets ‘Soup of the Day’ right!” said Mark, as he wiped flecks of pumpkin soup from his chin.
“At $13.50 a serve you expect a deep dish bowl you could mix a cake in and at least two slices of thick toast, and this place certainly delivered.”
Discussing his hot tourist tips for picking good cafes on regional travels, Mark told The Advocate whilst there were generally plenty of options, there’s a few watch outs when dining on the road.
“There’s usually some boutique fair trade joint started by some tree-changing hipsters who have moved from the city, their coffee will explode every neuron in your head but they’ll charge like a wounded bull for it.”
“Then there’s an old tea house, that reheats scones and jam for the elderly, always good if you want directions.”
“And then there’s always one attached to a local art gallery, the coffee will be weak as watercolour paint and their BLT sandwich for $19 isn’t worth the twine it’s wrapped in!’
After finishing his bowl of random soup, Mark told our reporter he might leave some positive reviews online when he gets WiFi at the caravan park tonight.
