One of Betoota’s most prominent Muslim HR professionals, Sally Guerra has today spoken to Betoota Advocate about the trials and compromise that comes with observing the holy month of Ramadan in Betoota.
The 25-year-old employee of a boutique Betoota-based furniture retailer is just one of many members of Betoota’s historic Islamic community taking part in the religious month of observance.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (Sawm) to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief.
Aside from the scorching daylight heat and occasional rolling black outs in the evenings, Sally says the biggest hurdle is working with Brendan from the marketing department.
“Ohmygot” says Brendan.
“Not even water?!”
Like many white creatives males that have been to Morocco at some point in their lives, Brendan is fascinated by anyone who he can talk about Morocco too, even if it is a Malaysian-Australian coworker who’s never left Queensland.
As the questions keep flying, Sally begins answering with short yes and no answers. But, Big Brendo doesn’t take the hint, and relishes in the chance to bring up the fact that he studied Eastern Religions in uni.
“So like, what if, like say, I was Muslim…” Brendan launches into his next question, before Sally jumps at the opportunity to run an errand for her coworkers.
“He’s definitely been the most difficult element so far” she told us.
“I’m not out there asking him about the intricacies around his cultural rituals. Even thought there’s heaps I want to ask him”
“Like, why do people cheer during the crashes in motorsport?”
