As social media rages with right-wing culture wars surrounding multiculturalism, Indigenous rights, and youth issues – tomorrow is a day for Australia’s loudest and proudest patriots to put their money where their forehead is. In the ANZAC DAY two up ring.
However, as is universally acknowledged in the Australian society that exists offline – to indulge in a full day of drinking and gambling in the name of our returned servicemen, is rather uncouth if you haven’t attended the dawn service in the morning.
However, for our most staunch nationalists, a 4:45am start on a public holiday is a bit much – but that shouldn’t make them any more proud to be Aussie!
And the greatest offenders of this Aussie Pride / Sleep-In hypocrisy are the same grey-haired cohort who benefited directly from post-war Australia.
The same demographic that were lucky enough to avoid the Vietnam draft and then complain about all of the refugees and veterans that clogged up our social services in the immediate aftermath despite being directly catered to by both major political classes and the Australian media for the best part of the century.
However, in some bizarre turn of events, despite living fruitful lives that were free of war and the horrors that come with it – this once anti-war generation of pot-smoking flower children have transformed in right-wing patriots who think young people could benefit from spending a couple years in the trenches ducking bullets.
It could teach them that hard work is more important than begging old people to free up the crowded housing market by selling their unnecessarily large 5 bedroom homes and fucking off to the coast or country like the generation before them did.
One of these proud self-care patriots is vocal Betoota-based Baby Boomer, Graham Fox (67), whose own kids don’t take him out anymore because of the guttural moans he makes during every Welcome To Country.
“Why do I have to be welcomed to my OWN country” says Graham, who will be sleeping in silk sheets until 9am tomorrow morning.
“The kids and these woke minorities don’t have any respect for this country. The diggers would be rolling in their graves”
