With all of her children in town, Betoota mum Sandra Pershorn (58) is finally content with the amount of alcohol in her shopping trolley.
While not much of a bigger drinker most of the time, Mrs Pershorn tends to develop quite an interesting relationship with alcohol during Christmas. As like many Australians, she has trouble separating celebration and toxic alcohol consumption.
And like many Australians, she has to stock up this afternoon because the family will be arriving any day now, and there’s a couple days over the Christmas/New Year period where everything will be closed.
“That should do it” she says, while overlooking roughly 2000 standard drinks between an array of wine, beer and spirits”
“Actually. Will this be enough?”
“Should I get an extra bottle of rum in case Sarah’s boyfriend decides he wants to start drinking again?”
“I hope he doesn’t, but I’ll get one just in case”
The 19-year-old working the floor at the local liquor wholesaler says he sees it all the time with mums and trolleys, and it’s the maternal element of not having to do more than one trip to bottle shop that results in such big orders.
“I see dads coming up here for two cartons of Gold”
“Like they honestly think that’ll do them”
