Western Australia has now not only banned people from coming to visit, but have also banned people from leaving for the first time – after a positive COVID-19 result triggers a five-day shutdown of the state’s most populous regions.
This comes as Perth and other parts of WA entered a snap five-day lockdown yesterday, sparked by a hotel security guard contracting COVID-19. There are fears he has the rapidly spreading UK variant.
As of 6:00pm AWST yesterday, Perth, the Peel region and the South West region went into a five-day lockdown, with people in those areas required to stay at home.
Results from genomic testing are not expected until later today or tomorrow, but authorities have flagged the man could have the UK strain of the virus as he was on a hotel floor where a positive case was under quarantine.
The UK strain is known to be far more contagious than the original, unless it’s in Brisbane.
States have imposed restrictions on arrivals from Western Australia, while Premier McGowan imposes his own bans on anyone leaving.
