The main street of Betoota will be covered in a sea of floppy straw hats this weekend as our town welcomes the arrival of a new wine and cheese festival.

The influx of wide brim comes as ‘Mould’, a swanky artisan cheese festival arrives much to the delight of local beauticians and women called “Nicole”.

After stopping through Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, the festival has finally touched down in the Diamantina, in news that will see thousands of camembert connoisseurs descend on Wally Lewis Street to line their stomach with only wafer crackers, then get totally torched on rosé and prosecco.

Speaking to a representative from Betoota’s Chamber of Commerce, Julie Leevey, it’s believed the festival is about to provide a much needed injection of cash into local businesses.

“We know a number of fine food purveyors and artisan cheesemakers in town have been struggling through this winter, the cost of living has really slowed down the appearance of five-metre-long cheese boards at weddings this year.”

“But now that Mould is activating this weekend, we expect up to 10,000 fans of P!NK and Keith Urban will turn up in their straws, and quite frankly let the girls play!”

However it’s not just Betoota’s female population who have turned up in fashionable headwear, it’s believed a number of local blokes will try to debut a cool new hat too.

“It’s not just cheese fans down here, with over five craft beer stands open this weekend you can expect to see a faux-Akubra on the head of a few guys hiding their receding hairline.”

“Just look at the two guys manning the Hurley Bay Brewery stand, both of them have their winery friendly felt hats on.”

“Plus we’ve got some guy from a random season of Masterchef over at the cooking demonstration stand, you can’t tell me he won’t rock up trying to revive the fedora!”

Mould Festival will be taking over downtown Betoota this Saturday and Sunday 10am-3pm, or until the rosé runs out.
