An interstate tourist has been hospitalised in Perth this afternoon after an incident of temporary blinding.
The blinding is believed to have been as a result of exposure to a large amount of high visibility workwear at Perth Airport a short time ago.
The exposure came earlier when the tourist foolishly walked off her plane and into the terminal without suitable eye protection.
It is well known by many in the West that the airport always has an extremely high concentration of high-vis wearing FIFO and construction workers, however, tourists have often been caught out by the phenomenon.
The woman who was temporarily blinded was unavailable for comment, but her doctor informed us that she would regain sight at some point in the next 24-48 hours.
“She will be okay,” the doctor said.
“Apparently she will be in WA for a couple of weeks on holiday and considering that she was unaware of the risk posed by the concentration of ‘fluro’ clothing, we have taken the time to explain a few things to her.”
“I mean, Jesus, if not next thing we know she’ll be swimming out in the deep water off one of our beaches without a care in the world.”
“Or she’ll be heading down to the Beach Club at Cott [elsoe] without a Polo. I had to give her a bit of a rundown on how things work over here,” he laughed.
We contacted Perth Airport management regarding the incident.
“The Airport staff are always diligent in alerting people that the FIFO glare is a hazard to tourists,” a spokesperson said.
“Unfortunately this traveller refused to adhere to our instructions and has suffered as a result.”
