A litany of strongman dictators recently gathered to discuss how the Lord Mayor of Sydney has managed to hold power for so long – and what she can teach them.
The meeting, held in Minsk, Belarus, featured the likes of Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong Un, and Ayatollah Khamenei—each hoping to learn something from the Sydney mayor, who has just secured a sixth term after a lengthy 20-year grip on power.
Clover Moore, the revered “Iron Lady” of Sydney, has long dominated the city’s local politics for over twenty years, and many Sydneysiders can hardly remember, or even imagine, a Sydney without her as their leader.
As delegations from rogue nations around the world assembled, many top analysts, philosophers, and political scientists hoped that studying Clover Moore could provide insights into maintaining power and controlling a population for so long, all under the guise of a healthy democracy.
Kim Jong Un, leader of one of the least democratic nations on earth, North Korea, was particularly impressed by Moore’s ability to create an environment where her citizens cannot even conceive her not being their leader.
“Much like my grandfather and my father, Clover Moore has managed to make her citizens mentally, emotionally, and spiritually dependent on her. I have yet to achieve this, and I understand how vital it is for my longevity as leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” said Kim.
Aleksandr Lukashenko, leader of the host nation of the event, stated that the meeting was an overall success and that all delegations left having learned something.
“It’s very impressive how she’s able to flip the narrative on any of her critics and turn criticism into simply being ungrateful,” said Lukashenko.
“It’s brilliant—narrative control on a mass scale. How didn’t I think of that?”
As the meeting drew to a close, leaders of each nation raised a toast to another four years of Clover Moore’s glorious reign over the city of Sydney.
