In yet another blow for the Hollywood elite, the iconic ‘Ellen Selfie’ has today been forcibly photoshopped, after many requests from the management of each actor involved in it.
In the 86th Academy Awards of 2014, prominent TV personality and ceremony host, Ellen Degenres reportedly ‘broke the internet’ with a mid-show gag.
Prior to the introduction of the Academy Awards for Technical Achievement montage, DeGeneres and several ceremony attendees such as Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Channing Tatum, Lupita Nyong’o, and Peter Nyong’o (Lupita’s brother) participated in a group selfie. The resulting tweet initially disabled the site and was eventually retweeted on Twitter over 3.4 million times. It surpassed the previous record retweet of Barack and Michelle Obama’s post-election hug photo, which had been retweeted 778,000 times, in just 35 minutes.
However, in true Hollywood revisionist style, the photo has now been permanently altered to replace Kevin Spacey with a more wholesome patriarchal film icon, Nicolas Cage.
This is just a long string of legacies that have been wiped from Hollywood history, following allegations in October last year by former child star Anthony Rapp.
Star Trek: Discovery actor accused Spacey of making sexual advances toward him when he was 14-years-old. Spacey was 26 at the time.
In a heavily criticised apology, Spacey said he did not recall the incident involving Rapp but offered “the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour” and said something about being gay.
A number of other allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault were also made in relation to Spacey, some of which are presently under investigation, regarding his time in theatre, TV and film.
A spokesperson for Kevin Spacey says being replaced by Nicolas Cage is a shame. But remember, he chooses to live his life as a gay man now, so go easy on him.
