As of Monday morning, Kamala Harris is now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee for the 2024 US Election.
This comes after the incumbent President Joe Biden declared that he will be leaving politics at the conclusion of his current term.
It’s an announcement that has had the Republicans running around in circles, after the Democrats waited until after last week’s RNC convention to announce that they will not be putting forward the same candidate that Donald Trump and J.D Vance just spent a week campaigning against.
However, Harris’s nomination is not yet confirmed – and the party needs to officially vote on her selection at the Democratic National Convention next month before they can open the campaign war chest.
One of the big questions that needs to be answered before this belated race to the White House begins, is who will be her running mate on the ticket.
The names of potential VP candidates currently being tabled include the likes of Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. There is also the bolder options of selecting another female like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer or Biden’s openly gay secretary of Transport, Pete Buttigieg.
Although one thing that is certain is that Harris needs to select someone who represents a marginal swing state, in an effort to expand the voter base beyond pro-abortion Californians in an election that will likely come down to The Wire.
While Harris has the potential to be first woman ever selected President, as well as the first politician of Indian heritage, as well as the first black woman selected President – this does not necessarily lock in those particular demographics as safe voters.
It is for this reason that Kamala Harris might look to cast a wider net and select a white male that has a track record of winning the support of both black democrats, the white working class, and Christian leaders.
The number one pick as it stands is prominent Maryland Democrat, Tommy Carcetti.
Kamala Harris is believed to have offered to the position to Carcetti during a phone call earlier today, stating “Black folks been voting white for a long time. You come correct, we listen. It’s y’all that don’t never vote black.”
After successfully campaigning for Baltimore mayor and state Governor on key issues like urban renewal and economic prosperity, Carcetti is renowned for his tough-love relationship with both crime and policing – as well as his ability to charm and seduce female voters.
When asked for comment about his ability to expand the Democrats voter base as potential VP candidate, Carcetti reaffirmed his loyalty to the voters who got him where he is today.
